A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth student was killed early Saturday morning in a stabbing outside of popular nightclub Mezzo Lounge. Another UMass Dartmouth student was injured.

The students, 18-year-old Marvins Antoine and 19-year-old Kensley Macean — both first-year members of the university’s football team — were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment hours after a loss to Framingham State on their home field. Antoine suffered stab wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Macean’s head, arm and neck injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.

Both victims “had been at the establishment with other members of the team,” according to a press release shared with The Herald by Kristy dosReis, Providence’s chief public information officer for public safety.

An altercation broke out at the nightclub around midnight, according to the press release. The two stabbings occurred after those involved moved across the street to a Wendy’s parking lot. Providence Police patrol officers arrived at approximately 12:30 a.m.

Nineteen-year-old Chukuwnonso Uzoma-eze is facing a murder charge for the stabbing. Uzoma-eze, who police identified as a UMass Dartmouth student, allegedly left the scene and was later taken into custody as a suspect by UMass Dartmouth police, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez announced Saturday afternoon.

Perez also shared that Flock cameras helped identify Uzoma-eze’s vehicle.

PPD and UMass Dartmouth police continue to investigate the incident, the press release added.

“Our hearts and prayers are very much with Marvins’s family, friends, classmates and teammates as we mourn his loss together,” UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller, wrote in a statement to the university community shared with The Herald.

“We also send our prayers and best wishes for Kensley’s recovery, and hope that he will be able to resume his education here soon,” he added.

Fuller also assured the community that there is “no reason to believe there is any ongoing threat to the UMass Dartmouth community.”

UMass Dartmouth Football, Rhode Island Hospital and Mezzo Lounge did not immediately respond to The Herald’s requests for comment.

Uzoma-eze could not be reached for comment.
