Many Brown students concentrating in computer science hope to travel to Silicon Valley this summer to intern for a variety of tech companies and startups. But do these students realize the amount of space that they would take up by joining the tech industry in cities like San Francisco? The University ...
On the first day of classes, I walked to campus up to College Hill on sidewalks that had seen little shoveling or salting. On many occasions it seemed safer to walk on the plowed and salted streets, which put me in danger of automobile traffic but limited my chances of slipping and falling. On sidewalks ...
Hardly a week has passed since President Trump agreed to a stopgap deal to reopen the government, ending the prolonged 35-day shutdown at least for a brief spell. An unmitigated political and practical disaster, Trump’s accession has done little to slow his rising disapproval ratings. Nor has it healed ...
On Jan. 11, Lin-Manuel Miranda starred in his hit musical “Hamilton” on the opening night of the almost three-week fundraising performance series in Puerto Rico. “Hamilton” in Puerto Rico was marketed as a huge effort to support the island’s people, who are still struggling to recover nearly ...
Last month in a 5-4 decision, the United States Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration’s ban on the participation of most transgender individuals in the military to take effect — another unfortunate and harsh blow to transgender people in the United States. While current military members ...
On a foundational level, we all have an understanding of right and wrong and are able to identify these behaviors in others. This rings particularly true when it comes to celebrities or public figures. Though it’s often hard to believe, they’re people just like us — the major difference being ...
The Los Angeles Rams will take on the mighty New England Patriots in the Super Bowl this Sunday. This marks the third consecutive Super Bowl appearance for the Pats, who continue to dominate the AFC, maintaining their powerhouse status. The Rams, however, will play in the season’s final game for the ...
In the spring of 1986, the Brown Spectator published its inaugural issue. Proclaiming itself “The Right Alternative” to existing student publications, the Spectator aimed to provide an outlet for conservative and libertarian thought on a campus the journal’s staff alleged to be overwhelmingly ...
During my second semester as an undergraduate, it clicked. Brown is more than a place of learning; it is also an idea: a celebration of free inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge deployed in service of making our world a better place. Born from countless people, values and aspirations, it is a dynamic ...
I graduate in four months and have no idea what I’m doing next year. As so many fellow ’19-ers know, it is a terrifying feeling. The comfort and regularity of college life are rapidly giving way to an impending unknown where the only certainties are skyrocketing rents and more expensive access to ...
If you’ve been a Brown student for any period of time, you’ve probably heard about sin awareness day. For most of us, this inevitable part of the semester boils down to a few days each year when everyone’s Snapchat stories are full of videos of a couple guys yelling indistinguishably atop a box ...
Corporations have been known to capitalize on environmental sustainability to increase customer favor without clearly outlining the impact of their efforts. This should be no surprise: these companies pay to promote their business, not cure the ills of the world. Thus, their clarion call to consumers ...
The National Football League postseason is the highlight of the year for football enthusiasts. The best teams in the league play tough playoff football. Every game is an elimination game, and each week the matchups get more exciting right up until the Super Bowl. Except for one misstep. Somewhere in ...
The Los Angeles teachers’ strike ended Tuesday night after six days of picketing. Teachers and other educators returned Wednesday to classrooms having successfully earned from the district smaller class sizes, a six-percent raise and more counselors, librarians and nurses. As a daughter of a school ...
In the past few weeks, disturbing tales of sexist and racist harassment at academic conferences have been making headlines. Women scholars have been belittled at the American Historical Association annual meeting, and black scholars have been asked to prove that they belong at the joint meeting of the ...
Last semester, Brown students arrived to find that easy-to-access e-scooters and bicycles had sprouted up like weeds in the cracks of campus sidewalks. New app-based programs meant that students who couldn’t bring their own rides to campus suddenly had more transportation options. And if the often-empty ...
If you are a STEM concentrator at Brown, research is key. The sooner an undergraduate gets into research, the better and more competitive their resume will be. To students either deciding sophomore spring they want to concentrate in STEM without any prior research experience, or students who come from ...
First, brown one diced onion in butter in a large pot. Next, add about two pounds of chopped carrots, along with a tablespoon or two of minced ginger and a tablespoon of chopped fresh herbs such as parsley, tarragon or lemongrass. Saute until the onions are soft and the carrots are starting to pick ...
My favorite quote about American elections is from political scientist Alexis De Tocqueville, who in 1835 described our process of electing a president as “a time of national crisis. As the election draws near, intrigues intensify and agitation increases and spreads. The citizens divide into several ...
In 2016, Ugur Cetintemel, a professor of computer science and the department’s chair, described in a Herald article that one in five current undergraduates will have taken a computer science course before graduation. Students at Brown are becoming more interested in computer science courses because ...
